Being Present in All Ways

There's this whole movement right now about "being present". <DEEP MEDITATIVE BREATH GOES HERE> Are you with me? Do you feel the chair against your back, the socks on your feet and your eyes rolling toward the back of your head? Good. It's working. And it IS a movement. Don't get e wrong, I'm on board. I yoga occasionally, I meditate between errands in my car and I put my phone down when I am with my kids. I try to be "here", NOW. But really, where the hell else am I gonna be?
Wherever your mind is.
You now as well as I do you can be at work and not "be at work" (hi Facebook). You can be at the park with your kids and not "be at the park" (go swing!) ....and you can be preparing a meal and NOT preparing a "meal"......eating well but not eating "well". Because you aren't PRESENT...and all that means is your attention isn't focused on where it should be at that time....work, kids or food. Measuring, weighing, portioning our food is just like weighing measuring and portioning our time.
.We may not like being at work, but we go and do our best....shut down the browser and do what we are paid to do. We might get a notification on our phone while our family is telling us about their day, but we can ignore that to give our focus to those most important to us. and check messages later. And we could be at the park watching soccer practice, and rather than sit and gossip with another parent we choose to snap photos and cheer the kids on. This is being present and intentional. This is really living! Focusing on our time in the kitchen by preparing healthy foods and controlling our portions is the same thing. It is slowing down, taking time and focusing on the important task at that place in time to experience the benefit of that act in the present, rather than cooking and serving foods from habit and eating on auto pilot without even giving a thought. "Portions" are different for everyone. You may not have a health goal or an issue with food. But taking the time to stop and focus on your actions and behaviors in regards to food will have a powerful impact on you. What that looks like for YOU, I cannot say. What is looks like for me? A healthy body. A stable mind. But the biggest? I can am FOCUSED on what serves me.....I see there is no lack in my life...and I am back to being grateful and "saying grace" over y plate. Be present.
For your work. For your family. For YOURSELF.
